The platinum-selling fifth album from Canada’s Barenaked Ladies gets a deluxe makeover
Originally released September 12, 2000, the Barenaked Ladies’ Maroon was an intentional pivot in a more serious direction after the blockbuster success of 1998’s Stunt (the album which had featured the novelty juggernaut “One Week”). The album peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in the U.S., and debuted at number 1 in the band’s native Canada.
Now, Rhino Records has released a deluxe edition of Maroon for download and streaming, with a vinyl version available for pre-order.
The lead single from Maroon was the melancholy “Pinch Me,” a song soaked in suburban ennui. In honor of the album’s twentieth anniversary, Barenaked Ladies have recorded a new commentary for the “Pinch Me” video.
Other tracks from the album include the singles “Too Little Too Late” and “Falling for the First Time,” as well as the tragic car-crash ballad “Tonight Is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel.” (“Hidden Sun,” which was an unlisted bonus track on the original album — ah, the CD era –, is now a separate, labeled track.)
