Now playing at the Hollywood Pantages is the Tony Award winning adaptation of Baz Luhrman’s hit film Moulin Rouge! It’s an exciting sexy blast with an absolute stellar cast.
I haven’t seen the original film in ages so it felt like new for me. The show has been updated with more current songs, but the mainstays from the film remain. You get Your Song, Roxeanne, and Lady Marmalade, among others. For me some of the choices were a little easy and safe but they’re good songs anyway so is that really worth complaining about?
The show is a joy and the cast is incredible. Everyone shines, and in fact the Roxanne sequence brought the audience to a standing ovation, mid show. I’ve only seen that one other time, if memory serves, with Andrea Martin on the opening night of Pippin. It was certainly deserved.
It also might be one of the horniest shows I’ve seen. The cast is incredibly attractive and running around in some choice wardrobes so that only adds to the pleasure of this show, mostly because it is a pretty diverse one as well. People of all shapes, sizes, colors, and genders, make up the electric ensemble. They’re all presented as beautiful. It’s almost a utopia aside from the fact that it’s teetering on financial collapse and need the investment of a smarmy and dangerous Duke.
If you know the movie, you know the show. There isn’t much deviation. The book might have some clunky bits to it but overall, any weaknesses I found in that area where more than made up for by the exceedingly talented cast. Honestly, they make you want to get up and go to the club yourself.
The show is well worth a watch for the spectacle alone but the amazing cast and the catchy songs make it a must see for theater fans.
Thankfully, you have plenty of chances between its run here in Hollywood and in Costa Mesa after that.
