Back in the 80s when teenage murder was all the rage and we cheerfully sang along to “Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun,” a freshfaced Winona Ryder and l’il Nicholson himself, Christian Slater, teamed up to take down the mean girls in the film Heathers.
Well, they are back. Sort of. Viacom-owned channel TV Land is developing an anthology series based on the 1989 cult film.
No word of any involvement by the two original leads.
This reimagining will be set in the present day, cutting the shoulder pad and hair mousse budget by half, and this time the popular girls are a little more diverse. One Heather is white and not Barbie-sized, one is black and gay, and one is a male, described as “gender-queer”. So, not at all like the carbon-copy princesses we were kind of glad to see meet their demise at the hands of underdog misfits Veronica and J.D. And will there be croquet? There must be croquet!
TV Land claims it will be a black comedy. How politically correct it will have to be remains to be seen.
