This week we’ve got mutants, pets, TV writers, and Victorian houses at the box office!
The Last Black Man in San Francisco – The directorial debut of Joe Talbot stars Jimmie Falls and is inspired by his own life as he attempts to reclaim his childhood home, a Victorian house built by his grandfather, in San Francisco’s Fillmore District. Jonathan Majors (Captive State), Danny Glover (Sorry to Bother You), Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story), and Thora Birch (Ghost World) co-star in this multiple award-winning Sundance film. Late Night – Written by Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project, The Office) and Directed by Nisha Ganatra (Transparent) is a comedy set in the world of a dying Late Night show. Emma Thompson (Men in Black: International) is the tough as nails host who hires a freshman writer (and only woman on the writing staff), Mindy Kaling, to save the show. Amy Ryan (Beautiful Boy), Hugh Dancy (Hannibal, The Path), John Lithgow (The Crown, Pet Sematary), and Reid Scott (Veep) round out the cast. Click here to buy tickets.
X-Men: The Last Stand Dark Phoenix – The fourth X-Men film in prequel series, the seventh (and final?) X-Men branded film, and the 12th film in the overall X-Men series. In his directorial debut, writer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand, xXx: State of the Union) closes out Fox’s X-Men series, by ending before the first X-Men film and re-hashing the plot of the 3rd one. The entire cast from 2016’s X-Men: Apocalyse returns including Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), Michael Fassbender (The Snowman), James McAvoy (Glass), and the contractually obligated Jennifer Lawrence (Red Sparrow, Mother!). The Secret Life of Pets 2 – Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, The Lorax) directs this animated sequel about what pets do when we’re not home. Most of the cast returns including Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), Kevin Hart (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), and Lake Bell (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). Newcomers include Nick Kroll (Big Mouth), Harrison Ford (The Age of Adaline), and Patton Oswalt (A.P. Bio), replacing a problematic comedian in the main role. Click here to buy tickets.
