Oh Reade. You poor, poor duckling. This episode, we see Reade very quickly and disastrously fall apart.
Blindspot Recap Season 2 Episode 5
First, Jane remembers something about the aftermath of Orion. She was being treated by a doctor. She remembers the doctor’s ring, but little else. When she asks Mom about the whole thing, she’s told that the doctor was one who helped her afterward, but was killed in a raid or somesuch. When she asks how she escaped and got back home, her mother tells her she stowed away on a cargo ship, but it’s pretty easy to see right away that the old love is lying to Jane. Later in the episode, that’s confirmed. Her brother thinks that as long as they keep bringing Jane along on their mission, it won’t matter what she remembers–it’ll be too late by then. That’s rather…ominous.
We are reminded that Weller has been watched by Sandstorm for a very long time, and Weller’s rather worried about that. As well he likely should be.
Weller goes to a doctor’s appointment with Allie to check up on the baby, and Weller decides to be an over paternalistic jerk. Allie kinda calls him on that, but he’s not likely to unclench anytime soon.
We also see Borden and Patterson brushing their teeth together! GO PATTERSON! At least somebody gets to be happy (for now?). Things have obviously progressed there — full steam ahead.
Zapata has taken the initiative to strongarm the hacker from last episode into helping with decoding the black hole picture found on Mayfair’s USB drive. He gives them an idea around laminar flow–unspool the swirl, and maybe the picture will resolve into something usable. Surprise, surprise–it does. Nas isn’t happy Zapata involved the hacker, but she’s glad to have the information. It indicates that Mayfair was working with Douglas Winter? Hrm. We’ll have to see where that piece of information goes.
Next Tattoo Clue, Please
Meanwhile, the team find out from another tattoo and set of puzzles that something is going down that very day in a local park. Members of the Irish mob are planning something. A politician is giving a speech, and it’s a politician that’s put a lot of the Family away. As they search the crowd, an assassin with a gun cleverly hidden in a camera shoots at the politician. They get the guy, and figure they need to talk to the head of the Family.
Meanwhile, Reade is seriously going bananapants crazy. After threatening the pedo coach, he breaks into the guys house. He starts tapping on a suspicious looking wall, and there’s the kind of sound that makes your heart sink. There’s something awful in there.
And there is. It’s tapes, with kids’ names on them. One of them is Reade’s. This is Not Good. He pops the tape into a VCR (who still has those? Pedos who’ve been around forever, apparently) and thankfully we cut back to the team before we see anything on the tape.
Once they have the head of the crime Family there at HQ, he tells them that he’s not the head of the Family anymore–the politician is. He refused to tell them that, though, until they brought Allie in. She’s old friends with the family. Weller is Not Amused. Pipe down Weller, the woman has a job to do.
The former head agrees to hand over some evidence he has against the new head, but there’s a catch–it’s in a retinal and handprint scan locked safe at his lawyer’s offices. Everyone is going to retrieve it, including Allie. Shut it, Weller.
Zapata takes the rest of the day off after getting a call from a cop friend about Reade–pedo coach made a complaint about the threats. She figures she’s going to find him.
When the team gets to the lawyer’s office, of course the Family has sent gunmen to get the evidence. The lawyer ratted them out, and the gunmen storm in. After a few tense moments, the team has the evidence out of the safe, and Jane and Allie split from Weller and Nas to get Mr. Ex Head and his lying lawyer out of the building safely. A shootout ensues, and Allie gets clipped in the leg. She admits to everyone on the coms that she’s pregnant with Weller’s baby. Naturally Weller freaks out, and nearly gets him and Nas shot by wanting to take the stupid way out of the building, but Nas knows better and reins him in.
Jane keeps a cool head, and continues trying to get everyone out alive. Once the lawyer admits to being the snitch, Jane handcuffs her to the stairs and leaves her. They have to stop Allie’s bleeding. She’s starting to look like she’s going to pass out. Jane gets something in place to stem the bleeding, and Mr. Ex Head leaves the evidence and decides to play the decoy distraction so everyone can get out.
But Will They All get Out?
Of course, they all get out. Allie now has a leg wound to recover from, and is stuck on the desk duty Weller wanted her to take anyway. He apologizes for being a jerk, but he got what he wanted anyway.
Zapata finally catches up with Reade, and when she enters the pedo coach’s house, she finds pedo coach dead and Reade standing over him looking a bit stunned and confused. What did you do, Reade? Hopefully, we find out he didn’t do it. We kind of wouldn’t blame him if he had, though, would we?
Also–are the episode titles an anagram puzzle like last season? That’s one worth looking into.
