We open on the shocker from last episode–and find out that Reade didn’t kill the pedo coach. Or so he says. Zapata helps him get out of the house before the neighborhood security arrives, and they plan to enter the investigation after the police get involved. They’ll have the perfect excuse to go into the crime scene and retrieve the VHS tape that Reade left in the VCR. He didn’t have the heart to watch it.
They go back to Zapata’s, and she has them strip off all their clothes to burn. She figures they can cover most of the angles where Reade looks guilty, including when he admits to having been parked outside the coach’s house when he was stalking him.
This doesn’t look good, Reade. I guess he just joins the ranks of the rest, having done something messed up like Mayfair.
Back at the FBI, they’ve been busy looking at all the information in the unspooled black hole image, and figure out where Winter (the whistleblower Mayfair was working with) is hiding out. It’s somewhere in Bulgaria. Before everyone can leave for Bulgaria, Jane gets a page from Roman.
While the team is in Bulgaria, Jane and Roman have to go retrieve the chip that they didn’t get when Roman killed off that asset a few episodes ago. Jane’s got to think fast on her feet to keep Roman from killing more people. She can do this, right?
We start to see more memories from when they were kids in their weird killer training orphanage, how Jane tried to protect Roman and give him a little bit of comfort. They had a coin that was the last they had of their parents. There’s also a puzzle box Jane had left Roman before the memory wipe. It’s obvious Jane doesn’t know how to open it, and Roman is pretty resentful. He wants his sister back.
Back at headquarters, Patterson and Borden were sparring a bit. OMG, how cute is Borderson?! Things seem to be moving along rapidly, but swimmingly.
In Bulgaria, the team find out that the new CIA head is also there and looking for Winter. Competition. Weller plans on winning that race, so it’s on.
They discover that Winter appears to be well watched, and after much subterfuge getting into the hotel with a HUGE suitcase, they get to Winter. He tells them that not only was he framed, but the goons ‘protecting’ him are actually Bulgarian government holding him there against his will.
Jane and Roman have hit a snag; the guy they were expecting at the company with the chip isn’t there. Jane does some quick thinking and knocks the lady out to get them into the safe with the chip.
The team in Bulgaria needs to dodge both the government men and the CIA, so they pack Winter in the suitcase and wheel him right out. CIA guy looks stunned. Weller wins. Of course.
Meanwhile, Patterson gets roped into examining a sound file the team in Bulgaria have sent; Winter taped it when two masked people threatened and framed him. The voices are distorted with voice changers. Borden wants to eat dinner with her, but Patterson gets a bit high strung–the last person to get involved with one of the case-related things she was trying to solve got killed–her ex, David. She gets increasingly frustrated, snaps at him, and calls him David. Oops.
Jane and Roman are running out of time. The alarms have gone off because the company has discovered the woman Jane knocked out. Roman will go and hold off the security goons, but Jane needs to stay with the safe, and when it opens, get away with the chip. Jane isn’t horribly happy about that. As crazy as he is, Roman is still her brother–even if she can’t remember it. Plus, how many people is he going to end up killing?
The team in Bulgaria hit another snag; the government goons catch up to them. But not before Nas and Weller have time to get it on? What the hell, Weller? Really? The guys with guns are going to put a serious crimp in things, until some extra help shows up in the form of Mr. CIA. When it’s obvious they’re not going to trust him OR cut him in, he pops off about torturing Jane. BAD MOVE. He’s hit a nerve with Weller, who looks like he’s going to strangle CIA until Nas steps in.
Jane has the chip, and tries to upload the information to Patterson, but it’s taking sooooooo loooong. Roman is getting the crap beat out of him, and it triggers a memory of Roman taking a beat down for her at the orphanage, too. She can’t just leave him. She pulls the chip, and runs off to save her brother.
Patterson makes up with Borden (and it’s so cute!) but also finds Nas’ bug in the therapy room. She tells Weller, who grimly files that one away.
Once Jane has Roman back at their safe house, she talks to him about her memory, and opens the puzzle box. It has another piece of the memory in it, and he hugs her and cries. It’s looking like he’s getting his sister back.
Back at the FBI, they’ve unscrambled the voices on the recording. It’s Roman and Shepherd (Mom). Weller says Shepherd’s voice is VERY familiar, and it makes me wonder a bit more about the FBI asset that Shepherd and Roman keep talking about. Is it Weller? Does he even know? They’ve obviously been watching him a long time, are they looking to manipulate him further, or is he some kind of Manchurian Candidate style sleeper?
Nas is pissed over the loss of the chip data. She wants to know if Jane sacrificed the chip to save Roman. Honestly, she wouldn’t have had time to wait for that long-ass upload, but she just says no, it just couldn’t be helped.
