Fresh Scares For Halloween Horror Movie Fun!

Garon CockrellBlu-Ray Review, Horror, MoviesLeave a Comment

It’s that spooky time of year at last! Not that this entire year hasn’t been spooky enough already but you know what I mean. It’s scary movie time! Planning a marathon of horror? Want a few new releases to dive into during your shocktober festivities? Maybe you just need to get away from the real horrors in the world currently.

Here are a few new release titles, and a couple new releases of older films, that are well worth your time and attention for this Halloween season. Also one title that misses the horror month deadline but is still one worth grabbing.

Tourist Trap VHS Collector’s Edition

Every year young people disappear… An eerie and deserted wax museum, SLAUSEN’S LOST OASIS, is the site for spine-tingling terror where four unsuspecting young travelers (Including TANYA ROBERTS from Charlie’s Angels) are lured into a very deadly TOURIST TRAP. Slausen (CHUCK CONNORS) is the reclusive and bizarre owner of this attraction, which is actually more like a macabre chamber of horrors. The grotesque and frightening mannequins in this sordid side-show are only the beginning of the murderous mayhem and nightmarish madness to come. Bonus features include: Interview with director David Schmoeller., Rare trailers., Director’s commentary.

Unfortunately, this VHS style bluray won’t release until November 10 but it’s well worth the wait and it can kick off your thanksgiving season of horror movie watching. I assume you’re like me and use any excuse for a horror movie marathon. This little cult gem is a blast to watch and the neat retro VHS packaging makes it great for collectors as well.

There are not nearly enough horror westerns. It’s a genre I would love to be able to write something in. Maybe I’ll get on that. Anyway, thankfully, there is a pretty cool new one that just came out that is, boiled down simply: Train Robbers vs Witches.

The Pale Door

The Dalton gang find shelter in a seemingly uninhabited ghost town after a train robbery goes south. Seeking help for their wounded leader, they are surprised to stumble upon a welcoming brothel in the town’s square. But the beautiful women who greet them are actually a coven of witches with very sinister plans for the unsuspecting outlaws – and the battle between good and evil is just beginning.

I mean witches, the old west, train robbers, a brothel? It’s got all the ingredients to be a cool movie and I think it succeeds.

Maybe you want something starring one of my faves? That doesn’t make much sense but this one does star Maisie Williams. It’s basically Don’t Breathe without the blindness.

The Owners

A group of friends think they found the perfect easy score – an empty house with a safe full of cash. But when the elderly couple that lives there comes home early, the tables are suddenly turned. As a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues, the would-be thieves must fight to save themselves from a nightmare they could never have imagined.

Do you get a little bit of Arya in this? Watch it and find out. It’s a pretty fun flick. It might lean a little more towards the thriller angle but that’s a pretty blurred line anyway isn’t it?

Shudder keeps knocking them out of the park with their originals and this one is another great addition to their collection of films.

Scare Package

Chad Buckley is a lonely Horror aficionado, spending his days overseeing a struggling video store and arguing with his only customer, Sam. When an unsuspecting job applicant arrives, Chad sets out to teach him the rules of Horror.

It’s fun, not perfect, but it will fit in nicely with your halloween needs.

RLJE Films released SCARE PACKAGE On Demand, Digital, DVD and Blu-ray October 20th.

Next up are a couple new releases from our faves at Scream Factory.

They’ve been on a roll lately with some great new releases but I figured one goofy fun 90s flick and one epic collection are worthy of pointing out specifically:

Ghost Ship

“One of the Scariest, Most Original Horror Movies in Years.” – Rob Blackwelder, San Francisco Examiner Finders keepers. Any abandoned ship floating in international waters can be claimed and towed to port by whomever is fortunate enough to find it. Or, in the case of one team of salvage experts, unfortunate enough. In this stylish, effects-packed chiller from Dark Castle Entertainment, salvagers trained for any situation imaginable come face to horrifying face with the unimaginable after boarding a derelict luxury liner. Julianna Margulies, Gabriel Byrne, Ron Eldard and Isaiah Washington are among the hands on deck who’ll confront a seafaring collector of souls. Steve Beck (Thirteen Ghosts) directs this frightful chiller.

It’s fun. I love the idea of this one and it’s a genre I’ve been thinking about diving into so I love the idea of revisiting this one during the season. Maybe it will inspire me! Also, it’s another great Scream Factory Collector’s Edition so expect the special features to be excellent.
Last but not least, the granddaddy box set you DEFINITELY want to get your hands on:
