“Tongues of Wild Boar”
Irish musician Hilary Woods has a new album due in March called Birthmarks, and we were treated to a preview via the single “Tongues of Wild Boar”. Well, well.
Now, assuming you aren’t familiar with Woods’ solo work or her time playing bass with the now defunct Irish group JJ72, what would the title of that single conjure up? Because, we know a title can make a difference in how you take in a song.
As an example, Lizzo’s “Good as Hell” simply makes you feel that way. “Tongues of Wild Boar” is the opposite. It has you feeling like you’re taking steps down a dark, wooded road … on edge, a bit threatened, for sure awake, the wild boars approaching. But in a good waaay?
And then there’s the somewhat disturbing Francis Bacon-esque video to go along with the densely layered music. Woods is breaking some aural and visual ground here.
This all adds up to an intriguing offering from a talented artist. What will the rest of Birthmarks sound like – dreamy and sparse like the 2018 album Colt? Can’t wait to hear.
Birthmarks is out March 13th on Sacred Bones Records
