Hoo boy. This episode was a doozy. The Devil unravels, going full-on trainwreck.

He’s a mess after killing Uriel. He blames himself (because of course, his hand was the one holding the knife) and in his grief acts out in a messy I’m-a-monster-might-as-well-act-like-one kind of way. He’s drinking to excess, shows up a mess to the crime scene, which is a Halloween zombie wedding. It’s a shame the Halloween episode was this one, because it could have been fun instead of depressing. Lucifer feels like he’s wearing his monster costume on the inside.

Aside from the small bit of fun with the backdrop of a zombie wedding, do we really care what happens in the case itself? Not really. Besides, these episodes are never about the case.

Lucifer throws himself into the case in some spots, taking some bit of solace in punishing the guilty party, even though it’s him feeling guilty. That was kind of the point. He wants to be held accountable for what he’s done. His reckless behavior earns him some scolding from Chloe, but she definitely knows something’s wrong.

Meanwhile, Mother takes Amenadiel to where Uriel is buried, and consoles him, telling him not to blame himself, but to blame her. He gets very angsty, and basically says he’s done with God’s bullshit. Hmm. I think we’re seeing more of her master plan, at work, here. This is certainly part of what she wanted.

Meanwhile, Maze does a bit more character development, and she gets a little bit of peace with the monster in her. She takes Trixie trick-or-treating, adorably guilts adults into giving Trixie more candy and at one house, money. She lets half of her real face show as a costume, and is visibly relieved when she shows it and Trixie pronounces it cool. She obviously has a new friend for life.

The case was involving a sniper on a revenge kick, killing people he felt ‘deserved’ it. Most had done him actual wrong. Lucifer’s antics come to a head when the team tracks down the sniper’s final target, and Lucifer stands in front of the woman, daring (begging?) the sniper to shoot him. He knows with Chloe there, a bullet will find it’s mark.

The sniper, however, has a personal code. He won’t shoot Lucifer, because he doesn’t feel it’s deserved. One more example of the universe telling him it’s not his fault, but like anyone in pain, he doesn’t hear it.

Back at the club, we get a great piano version of Unforgiven. No singing, though. Pity. Maybe too much anguish in the scene already? He chases everyone out of the club.

Meanwhile, Chloe gets home, and walks in on an old black and white horror film playing, and Maze and Trixie zonked out on the couch together, cuddled up. Could it be any more adorable? Seriously, Chloe never has to worry about that child’s safety ever again. God help anyone who ever threatened that kid. Safe to say that Maze is on the job. So, it’s a turning point for Chloe, too. Maybe she’s going to realize she can trust Maze? Maybe Maze is going to realize she can be trusted by someone other than Lucifer.

Throughout the episode, Lucifer hasn’t been talking to anyone about what’s bothering him, because really, who can he talk to aside from Mother and Amenadiel? No one quite believes who he is, anyway. So, he tries to go talk to Dr. Linda. She thinks he’s still talking in metaphors, and basically tells him to cut the bullshit and be honest.

Well.

So…he’s honest. There goes the whole ‘humans can’t have proof of the divine’ thing out the window. That’s why I’m wondering if this is going to get divinely retconned or something.

Her reaction is…less than favorable. Seeing Lucifer’s true face (kind of a burned mess from the fall, I’m assuming) puts her in a kind of paralyzed gibbering bit of fear, and puts that final nail in the OMG-I’m-a-monster coffin for Luci. He’s been rejected by the one person he’s been confiding in. I have to wonder, though, is this ultimately going to be her reaction? She’s a savvy enough lady, is she going to bounce back after that moment of utter astonishment and terror and just start to take it in stride? I mean, he caught her off guard, that’s for sure. I’ll be a bit disappointed if she doesn’t recover her cool.
