Mini Review: Maniac (Netflix Original Series)
Weird, but in a good way. If you want to just check out of deep thought and watch something, anything, maybe Maniac isn’t for you. If you want to binge an entire season, go with The Crown and not ponder its generous soap take on British history. But, if you like Jonah Hill and Emma Stone and surreal futurism that is well thought out, yeah, okay, get in here.
This is a Black Mirrory Japanese-influenced future with challenges thrown to Stone and Hill’s characters of the existential and social kind, after they are involved in a medical experiment. Cue the pathos, the dream sequences, the alternate realities, or wait, are they real? This 10-parter is, well, like a lot of good stuff, hard to explain. Also, might not be for you. However, if you’re the type who likes having deep discussions at 3am, and also like director Cary Fukunaga (True Detective), and the lead actors here, take a chance on Maniac.
