With Mermaids taking the world by storm, or rather by wave, here is the Gift Guide for Geeks inspired by our siblings under the water.
My first gift choice is a beautiful glass “trinket”, sure to have a special place on the shelf of every Mermaid. These waves are handcrafted by Joy Alyssa Day. She makes boatloads of beautiful glass works, but her wave suits a Mermaid.
You can get your waves with lots of foam, just a touch of foam, or you can let Joy decide what looks most beautiful. The pictures just don’t show how beautiful these little babies are. Mine has an iridescence, a sheen that I can’t capture in a photograph, no matter how hard I try. And with mine clocking in at 3.5″ wide and about 3″ tall, and a good 6 oz of glass, this is no trifling baby wave. You can purchase your Breaking Wave here. And at $45, it won’t break the bank.
My second pick is a little friend near and dear to my heart. The Blue-Ringed Octopus is one of the most venomous creatures in the ocean. But don’t be afraid of this little one from Emergent Glassworks. Your bright yellow and blue critter is perfectly safe, and loves to be worn around the neck.
Two inches in either direction, and with no seams for the cord to slip off, but ample space between the head and tentacles, your necklace is secure. Plus, being made of borosilicate, it’s less fragile than it looks. Buy your very own octopus, custom made by Emergent Glassworks here: Blue Ringed Octopus.
My next suggestion is for a piece of artwork by a brilliant New Orleans artist. Marrus has worked in several different capacities in the art world, and loves creating her art. This gift is one that I’ve been in love with for a while, and I’m actually including two different pieces. The first is from her DemonFae series, called MermFae, and the second is from the Go Figure collection, called Aquaestrienne.
At a perfectly sized 11″ by 8.5″, both are easy to mat and frame, fit on any wall, and are striking enough to start conversations. You can buy your lithograph here but make sure to look at all her art, there’s something to suit any taste. And you can also get a signed copy of her book “Lightsurfing”. Check out more MarrusArt.
And this brings me to my final gift idea. It’s perfect for unwinding at the end of the day, for warming up during the cold winter. Hand blended by Rubiee, formerly of Pandora Celtica fame, all teas from Dryad come in lovely green packaging, something pretty to look at while you wait for your tea to steep. I’m adding “Temptress” to this gift list, strawberries and apples play in black tea, while cacao drifts in to add that additional enticing flavor.
You can buy Temptress here in amounts ranging from a three cup sample to an entire pound. Dryad Tea is a perfect gift for anyone, anytime. Black, green, rooiboos, herbal, and a large selection of tea accessories, Dryad Tea is the perfect place to finish your gift shopping. And one of Rubiee’s bespoke Octo-Mugs is the perfect vessel for your Mermaid to drink their tea from.
