Rent Live

Rent Live

Back to 1989 and the threats of AIDS and eviction. So excited – this Sunday Fox will air a live version of Jonathan Larson’s Tony- and Pulitzer-winning rock musical, Rent. Loosely based on the Puccini opera La Boheme, where poverty and tuberculosis in 19th Century Paris were the issues, Rent follows a group of young artists struggling to survive in New York’s East Village. The musical ran off- and on-Broadway from 1996-2008, and the original cast included Idina Menzel, Jesse L. Martin and Anthony Rapp.

This production will air Sunday January 27th at 8pm ET – West coast Beasts will see it on a tape delay.

The cast for Fox’s Rent Live includes Vanessa Hudgens as the Menzel-originated role of Maureen and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Valentina as Angel. A lot of musical theater and pop talent are gathered here, includingTony-nominatedBrandon Victor Dixon from Jesus Christ Superstar Live, Grammy-winner Mario and, in the ensemble, The Greatest Showman‘s Keala Settle, who gets to lead “Seasons of Love”.
